Drop City formed in Sydney, Australia at the beginning of 1993. Later that year they recorded their first album A Revolution Of Purely Private Expectations which was released on the Red Eye label through Polydor in 1994. That year saw them tour extensively throughout Australia to critical acclaim for both the album and their live shows. The Chiaroscuro EP followed in late 1994 including a crackerjack cover of Spacemen 3s Losing Touch With My Mind. In September 1994, lead singer/songwriter Matthew J Tow recorded a solo album Youre Only As Good As Your Sound under the moniker of Colorsound which was picked up by Summershine Records in Australia. The following year it was released in the US on Sub Pop. A Drop City 7 single Hard To Smile was also released on Sub Pop that same year. In 1995 Drop City flew to London to record their second album Magic Transistor Radio with legendary producer Andy Wilkinson (Stereolab, Boo Radleys, My Bloody Valentine). This was followed by a tour of Canada where A Revolution... and Chiaroscuro were released on Canadian label Shake Records. The band toured through the US with highlights being New York and San Francisco. Magic Transistor Radio was released in Australia at the end of 1995 on Red Eye/Polydor. That year also saw Drop City play The Big Day Out festival and support the Stone Roses in Sydney. 1996 opened with Drop City recording the single Fools Rush In with producer Nick Launay (Midnight Oil, The Posies, PIL).
