On My Bat's Birthday, The Virtual Penguins continue their journey into strange yet oddly familiar musical landscapes. "The Fear We Know," "Redemption Rain," and the title track let you think for a moment that this might be a conventional alternative rock album, but other songs -- including "Wilde Beast," "Jungle," and "Shelter" will surprise you. Once again the Penguins employ their spare sonic landscape and brooding lyrics to create a moody effect, calling to mind artists such as Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, or even early R.E.M. But don't be fooled, this is a band with a sound all its own that will leave you wanting more.
