The Shrieking Violets is a Manchester based band formed by Natalie Bradbury and Tristan Burke in the autumn of 2007 as a side project from their respective bands (Natalie was violinist in indie folk group Planet Earth and Tristan was frontman of experimental art band Tracy Is Hot and the Clap). After Tristan's departure in the summer of 2008, Natalie was reluctantly encouraged to keep performing as guitarist and lead vocalist, and over the next year and half The Shrieking Violets became an ever evolving collective supported by Dominic Al Bhardi of Peanuts and Coque the Bear on drums, plus Sarah Hill on violin. Live shows have seen collaborations with Mat Riviere and Grace Denton of the Middle Ones, as well as Lauren Velvick and Tom Whyman from Manchester fun-pop group MRBLKRSHRRR. Natalie's highly personal songs, which can be heard in far-from perfect 8 track recordings, are often preoccupied with relationships, kissing, weather and seasons. Key influences include the guitar playing of John Fahey and Syd Barrett, the punk ethos of Husker Du and Minutemen, the pop sensibility of Motown and the sentimentality of Scott Walker and the Walker Brothers. Natalie also uses the name The Shrieking Violet for her Manchester blog www.theshriekingviolets.blogspot.com and printed fanzine.
