The Rattlesnake Totem is a black metal band which formed in Mississippi (United States) in 2008, and was founded by composer/vocalist N'ganga (a moniker derived from the skulls used as cauldrons for practicing necromancy in the style of afro-carribbean sorcery commonly known as "palo mayombe"). He was quickly joined by Ludite on bass, Meat-Shoppe Rapist on drums, and Edac to perform guitar parts composed by N'ganga. The music is heavily influenced by the early work of raw, DIY black metal bands from Norway as well as by Depressive Suicidal Black Bands (DSBM). Unlike most DSBM, however, The Rattlesnake Totem's lyrics take on a nihilistic philosophical bent as opposed to focusing on emotions. Common lyrical themes are nature metaphors (water, animals, forests etc.). In May, 2010, they recorded "Dusk of Dark Metamorphosis" with bassist and independent recording label owner Brute. It is scheduled to be released by Exterminate The Brutes Records as a split with punk-influenced black metal band, Third World Abortion.
