There are two artists with this name. 1) The Doorknobs were a band consisting of sister and brother Hannah Eddington and Sam Eddington, who were active from the mid-'90s to the early '00s. They belonged to the same lineage of American outsider music that produced Wesley Willis, Lucia Pamela, and Jandek. Their sound was deliberately ramshackle, featuring erratic combinations of dime-store toy instruments, pots and pans, clanging pianos and cheap keyboards, all recorded onto portable tape players. Songs are often arbitrarily cut off or disintegrate in the middle. The vocals are often off-key in a manner that verges on the antagonistic, and the band’s sense of humor seems bewilderingly random. Much of The Doorknobs’ material is versions of various children’s songs, performed with deliberate disregard for the original music; mixed in with these were numerous bizarre originals, as well as covers of various popular songs. Although their home “discography” includes 14 full-length albums, two EPs, one single, two “rarities” albums, and at least another full record’s worth of extra tracks, they never made any attempt to distribute any of their work during the band’s lifetime. Even though Sam and Hannah did play together in public on several occasions during the band’s existence, they not only did not play their recorded material, but never even performed under their band name.
