The Devil's Interval was an English folk trio that combined the individual vocal talents of Lauren McCormick, Jim Causley and Emily Portman, all, at the time, recent graduates of Newcastle University's "Folk and Traditional Music" degree (the first of its kind in England). The English song tradition that is strongly expressed in their solo work is also present in their group repertoire, an eclectic mix ranging from Tom Waits to Phoebe Smith and Dolly Parton. They released "Blood & Honey" in 2006 on Wild Goose Records (WGS335CD). The trio have become seasoned performers and workshop leaders having appeared at many major festivals including the Sidmouth International Festival, Glastonbury Festival, Whitby Folk Week, Towersey, and more. They reunited for a mini-tour in 2015. Note: The "devil's interval" (or diabolus in musica) is a tritone β a dissonance of three whole tones (six semitones) that historically, was avoided in medieval music for its unsettling, sinister sound but is widely used in modern music (rock, metal) to create tension and drama.
