The Cubby Creatures were born out of San Francisco's Mission District in 1997, becoming the musical arm of a cult-like art group called the Cubby, which is also the name of the group’s guiding principle / higher power. Jol and Brian formed the group with Emily on violin, Karl on clarinet, and Matt on drums. Matt quickly left the group and was replaced by Jason. Bill was asked to play the lead role in the Cubby Creatures' 1998 rock opera, The World of Tina, and soon after was asked to join the group on keyboards. After Jol left the group in 2001, Bill moved to guitar. Karl left in 2002, so the group moved on, free to rock a bit harder as a quartet. The recorded output of the Cubby Creatures has mutated with the changes in the band. A Very Cubby Christmas (1997) is an audio collage half way between Satan and Santa. The Blessed Invention (2000) was the first full-length album and was received well by local college radio. It caught the attention of San Francisco's Rodent Records, and the Cubby Creatures were immediately asked to join the roster of Rodent bands. The EP, Who Remembers Kathy Barra? (2001), released on CD and 10-inch vinyl, was the band's first with Rodent Records and the band's biggest national college radio success to date. Three Sides of Cubby (2002) came out on 7-inch vinyl and contained the Cubby Creatures' version of Nick Drake's "Fly."
