Formed in Liverpool in 2000, Smiling Jackals grew from a friendship-driven school project into a fiery indie rock trio. Frontman Rob Nicholson and bassist/vocalist Barry Sloane, childhood pals, started playing together in their teens under the name Happy Accident. When founding member Alan Jones departed, drummer Nick Kilroe and guitarist Paul rounded out the line-up. They rapidly gained traction on the Liverpool club circuit and appeared at Liverpool Music Week in 2005 as “The Jackals” — a moment that showcased their raw energy and solidified their local reputation. After releasing a 13-track self-titled demo in 2000, they performed nationally before members pursued other projects (Nick briefly joined Black Velvets and worked with Echo & the Bunnymen). Now active again in 2025, they’ve returned under the name Smiling Jackals, evolving their sound into a mature blend of gritty indie rock and emotional intensity. Their long-awaited debut album, Health Junkie, dropped on June 13, 2025, marking a raw and defiant comeback.
