Sleepy Company began in Philadelphia in 2000 as a (mostly) acoustic trio featuring Barry Bush and Dan Baker (aka Redbeard) on guitar and Robby Barringer on vocals. During the acoustic trio period, the group busked, played open mics, and recorded "bedroom country psychedelia" often with contributions from producer/5th-Beatle Matt Stevenson. In the fall of 2001, bassist Joe Coulombe and drummer Sherri Hamilton joined the band as Sleepy Company became a fully electric rock band. They recorded their self-titled debut album in summer 2002 at Matrix Music in Upper Darby, PA, and continued to play live in Philadelphia, including a stint as a house band at a now-defunct Center City bar. Sleepy Company played its last live shows in the late spring of 2003, but the now-fragmenting band continued to record its second and final album Care Thou Not (usually with one or more members missing) throughout the summer and fall at Stevenson's home studio on Webster Street in South Philly.
