Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced Sue Saint Marie) was a two-piece band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin made up of Michael Wojtasiak on guitar and vocals and Dan Lutes on drums, vocals, and occasional guitar. The two had been in the final line-up of the Afterthought, a quirky indie-pop band from Milwaukee/Green Bay. After seeing their quartet dwindle in late 1998 to a trio and eventually a duo, it was decided after a long night of alcohol-fueled meditation and reflection with San Diego Rockers Uranium 9-Volt and Ribbon Fix that a two-piece band was not only possible, but inevitable. Michael and Dan quickly wrote a new batch of songs, played a few shows, and recorded in December of 1998 with Rob Nero at J. Floyd in Wautoma, WI. The band honed their live show over the next few months and in June of 1999 embarked on a tour of the Midwest and East coast with fellow Wisconsin band and No Karma Recordings labelmates Cup 388. With such a streamlined lineup, their 80s New Wave, 90s emo and pop-punk, and math-rock influences could shine through in a unique way in each song. The band played their final show as a two-piece in July of 1999 opening for Shiner at Bay View’s Cactus Club. Michael had previously played in Green Bay's Pieglue and was head of local indie lable No Karma Recordings, which released their 1999 album, Press and Drizzle. Dan also played drums in the Fireflies, Gooseneck, and Origami. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional t
