Artist
The experimental music project Sam Therapy was started in 2018 in Hanover, Germany. Their songs are informed by minimal electronic beats, synthesized soundscapes, and noisy production. Because they don't play any instruments, Sam Therapy got their start in music experimenting with nothing but a computer and musical samples sent to them by their brother. Fascinated by the sound of digital distortion and inspired by the likes of David Lynch, Lana Del Rabies, Scott Walker, Bauhaus, Xiu Xiu, and Nine Inch Nails, they taught themselves the foundations of beat programming and song arrangement. THE GIRL WITH THE SUN IN HER HEAD is the result of these solitary sessions. The bulk of the songs were written in 2021 around themes of isolation, depression, and addiction. The world that is painted is black, white, and grey. However, THE GIRL WITH THE SUN IN HER HEAD is not all gloom and doom as the album represents a purifying exorcism. Music as therapy. The soundscapes on their sophomore album, summoned by a small array of cheap analog synthesizers, are more dense and layered, visceral, and out-of-control than on their digitally produced debut. I DESERVE TO BE HURT is inspired by yearning to express the malaise of inhabiting a body (touching on themes like sex, sickness, physical and mental pain, as well as body dysphoria) making use of the harsh vocabulary of power electronics. Sam Therapy's key influences for the album include Noise artists like Himukalt, Pharmakon, and Lana Del Rab
