Artist
For over three decades, Rick Potts has been an experimental sound artist and improvisational musician, starting in 1976 as a founding member of the LAFMS, The Los Angeles Free Music Society, a pioneering experimental DIY Sound Art/Noise collective. The once underground group of outside musicians is now internationally recognized as originators. He has developed nontraditional techniques to create and control sounds produced by adapted and customized musical instruments, homemade sound sources and found objects. Rick produces sounds which are unique, alarming, and funny with custom hinge-neck guitars, musical saws and random objects. He has a knack for finding the 'voice' of ordinary household products and adding them to his musical vocabulary of sounds. He also has extensive experience with electronic instruments from Buchla modular synthesizers and tape loops to digital samplers and drum machines and continuing through to the present with iPad apps. Solo performances and collaborations with other experimental musicians have taken him around the U.S., Japan and Europe. A partial list of groups Rick has performed, written songs and recorded with: LE FORTE FOUR - Multi-instrumentalist, Electronics, Vocals. 1975-present AIRWAY - Hinge-neck Guitar, Prepared Mandolin, Synthesizer 1978-present SOLID EYE - Multi-instrumentalist, Electronics 1994-2004 DINOSAURS WITH HORNS Multi-instrumentalist, Electronics- 1983-present HUMAN HANDS Bass, Guitar, Sax 1979-81 - 1997-2002 STEAMING CO
