Artist
Richard Godwin (born 1981) is a singer/songwriter from north London. Backing himself with finger-picked acoustic guitar, he sings haunting, dramatic, occasionally humorous ballads in a louche baritone that has drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. The strongest influence on his performing style is the dark, unflinching Belgian chansonnier, Jacques Brel, whose macabre account of lost virginity, Au Suivant, Godwin has translated as "Next!". In his own compositions, Godwin draws heavily both on French chanson and English vaudeville tradition, often singing in character (a sexually frustrated butler on "One of Many"; a cracked music hall performer on "Variety").
