Artist
Pu Xuezhai (proper name Pu Jin; a.k.a. Fu Xuezhai; Chinese: 溥雪齋; 1893 - 1966) was a guqin master, calligrapher, and painter master whose life bridged the late imperial and early modern periods. Born into the Manchu imperial Aisin-Gioro clan as a great-grandson of the Daoguang Emperor, Pu was raised in Beijing’s aristocratic milieu and received a rigorous education in poetry, painting, calligraphy, and classical music. After the fall of the Qing dynasty he became one of the key figures preserving literati artistic traditions within the Republican capital, cultivating close friendships with leading musicians and scholars such as Wang Mendu and Zhu Qingsheng. As a guqin player Pu Xuezhai was admired for his refined, introspective style rooted in the Yushan and Meian schools; his interpretations of pieces like Guang Ling San and Xiao Xiang Shui Yun were prized for their balance of austerity and lyrical depth. Beyond music he was a distinguished calligrapher and seal-carver, often integrating poetry, ink painting, and qin themes within single works. In the 1950s he served as a consultant and teacher at the Central Conservatory of Music, helping transmit traditional repertories to a new generation of musicians. Pu died in Beijing in 1966, remembered as one of the last scholar-artists to embody the “Three Perfections” of poetry, calligraphy, and music that defined the classical Chinese ideal.
