Pietro Maria Marsolo, or Marsoli , or Marzoli , or Marzolo (Messina , about 1580 - Piacenza , 9 November 1615 after), was an Italian composer and presbyter. There is not much biographical information on Marsolo. In the title pages of his works he asserts that he was from a noble family and that he was a doctor utriusque iuris; while the family "Marsolo" is unknown to the Sicilian heraldic repertoires, it is possible that he did legal studies at the University of Messina . From a dedication to a collection of motets to the bishop of Ferrara Giovanni Fontana in 1608 we learn that Marsolo had been ordained a priest . In 1604 he moved to Ferrara . He composed mainly madrigals for 5 voices, based on texts by Giovan Battista Marino (1569-1625), and sacred music; the first sacred work known to us, the Missa Motecta of 1606 is dedicated to the nuns of the monastery of Sant'Antonio in Polesine . The second book of the four-part madrigals, opera X, Marsolo uses arias of the monodists of the late sixteenth century (Giulio Caccini , Achille Falcone, Lelio Bertani , Sebastián Raval, etc.) but with the support of the basso continuo. In 1609 he was hired as chapel master of the Cathedral of Fano ; but in May 1610 he returned to Ferrara. In 1612 he tried without luck to succeed Claudio Monteverdi at the court of Mantua . He therefore remained in Ferrara until 1615 , the year in which he was appointed choirmaster in Piacenza ; after this date there is no news about him. First book of five-
