Artist
Paul Constantinescu (1909–1963) was a Romanian composer and educationalist Born on 30th June or July 1909 in Ploieşti, he studied music in Bucharest (1928–1933, with Alphonso Castaldi, Mihail Jora, and Dimitrie Cuclin) and in Vienna (1934–1935, with Franz Schmidt, Oscar Kahasta, and Joseph Marx). He was a professor in Bucharest at the Academy of Religious Music (1937–1941), then at the School of Military Music (1941–1944). He eventually taught harmony at the Bucharest Conservatory (1941–1963); he included courses about harmony in musical folklore and about Byzantine chant. He died on 20th December 1963 in Bucharest. Constantinescu is thought of as the leader of a new generation in Romanian classical music, starting around the 1940s (following that of George Enescu and his contemporaries). His music is influenced by folklore, incorporates aksak rhythms (a species of additive rhythms) and parlando-rubato, and makes use of fragments of folk melodies. Constantinescu was fond of the variation technique. He is admired for his skills as an orchestrator; he sometimes mimics folk instruments by combining timbres from instruments of the symphony orchestra. Many of his works were revised repeatedly.
