Artist
Mihail Jora (b. 2/14 August 1891, Roman – d. 10 May 1971, Bucharest) was a Romanian composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. He studied in Iasi (1909–11), Leipzig (1912–1914, with Robert Teichmüller and Max Reger) and Paris (1919–1920). Jora was the founder-chairman of the Society of Romanian Composers (1920) and music director of the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation (1928–1933). He taught harmony, counterpoint and composition at the Bucharest Conservatory. His compositions showcase a preference for program music and are folklore-flavoured with Romanian, Gypsy or Tatar melodies and rhythms. Jora was the first notable Romanian composer of ballets ("La piata" - 1928, "Cand strugurii se coc" - 1958 etc). He wrote numerous songs featuring lyrics by various Romanian poets. His chamber music reminds best of West-European neoclassicism. Other influences include German Romantic music and French impressionism. He was elected to the Romanian Academy in 1955. Mihail Jora received the Johann Gottfried von Herder Prize in 1969. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
