Artist
Ottavio Catalani (Enna , Sicily , ca. 1560 - 1629) was an Italian composer. He presumably took religious orders in Catania , where he also pursued his musical studies. Before 1600 he was an organist in this city. He moved to Rome , and from 1603 was Kapellmeister at the church of S. Apollinare attached to the German College, and held this position for about twenty years. There he composed according to the daily liturgical needs of the chapel he directed. Shortly before 1615 he was hired by the Borghese family as tutor and music teacher to Prince Marcantonio, and he remained in this position until at least 1619. His work as teacher and composer in those years was very intense. Tutor of Scipione Caffarelli Borghese , favorite nephew of the pope, and master of one of the most prestigious chapels in Rome, Catalani, in those years, composed much sacred music, including liturgical music, and many secular compositions for the needs of the Borghese family. His works, currently scattered in different libraries (in Rome, Berlin , Düsseldorf), often appear in editions that include works by different authors, and were published by some of the best music publishers of the time in Rome , such as B. Zanetti, B. Robletti, L. Griggs. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
