Orange Monks is a music-collective evolving around Danish songwriter and visual artist Henrik Astrup. It is a solo-project, but works as a collective where friends and colleges contribute in the musical process. The project started in 2008 as a virtual duo where Henrik and his childhood friend Niall Vinther began writing and recording songs sharing them on the Internet, when living apart in Denmark and Cambodia. The result of this collaboration was the Black Lung EP that came out in early 2010. The EP was released as free download at www.orangemonks.net – and was well received, with songs like Virtuality, Invisible and The Fall in which Henrik leads us through lonely landscapes of melancholy hoping to find his way out of the swamp. Danish music magazine GAFFA voted Black Lung “EP of the Month” in April 2010 followed by a 5 star review… “This seven-piece band has a really convincing front man in Henrik Astrup. The music is very subtle, powerful and masculine, sliding freely between different singer-songwriter-expressions without desperately clinging to one or the other. (…) It is both personal and strongly delivered, never sought dark, but obviously something they have to say” The idea behind the name of the group arose years before on a 20-hour train ride through the Malaysian jungle, where Henrik met a peculiar monk who was smoking cigarettes and talking on his cellphone, wearing the traditional orange robe as Buddhist monks do in those regions.
