Nick Volpe and the Impossible Dream is a college-formed band consisting of Nick Volpe (Vocals and Guitar), Cliff Goggins (Harmonica), Chris "Dego" Grasso (Saxophone), Kevin McCreary (Bass), and Jason Aloisio (Drums). Their unique blend of instruments leads to an even more unique sound. Their first, self titled, single, The Impossible Dream, would best be classified as blues, but blends elements of rock, funk, and jazz as well. Grasso's dirty, jazzy sax sound provides a perfect compliment to Volpe's rough vocal styling. McCreary keeps the track flowing with a playful bass line, as Goggins provides background emphasis, as well as a soulful solo to close out the song. The second single, Funky Shoes, provides a more playful, poppy sound, and is reminiscent of something you would hear at a Dave Matthews show. The track was difficult to record due to the loose, fun main riff, which must be brought back under control by all of the musicians at once on the downbeat. As a bonus, the original acoustic recording of The Impossible Dream has been included. This version is Volpe and Goggins only, playing a slower, less constructed version of the song, providing an insight into how the song grew. Unfortunately, the band was disbanded in 2007 as most of the members graduated and relocated, but a reunion is in the works.
