about

Nano Suratno (a.k.a. "Kang Nano S.", born in Pasar Kemis, Tarogong Garut, West Java, 4 April 1944, died 24 September 2010) was a Sundanese (West Javanese) composer and music arranger with a good reputation in Indonesia. He was involved in the Sundanese arts from an early age, and was a student and prodigy of the late composer Mang Koko. He had degrees from the high school and college conservatories in Bandung, S.M.K.I. and A.S.T.I., as well as from STSI Surakarta. Suratno was a prolific pop and classical composer of over 400 works. He had over 200 cassettes in circulation and many of his songs were performed by popular singers on video and tape. In the 1980s he reshaped pop Sunda to include performance in the pélog tuning system; he created a large number of hit songs that used traditional ensembles like gamelan degung, and successfully blended pop music with Sundanese traditional music. He and his wife, the singer Dheniarsih, often presented performances for foreign visitors at the traditional outdoor stage built next to their home in Bandung. Suratno taught at the high school conservatory in Bandung, S.M.K.I., and has also taught abroad in Japan and the U.S.A. His album Kalangkang (English: Shadows) was a best seller in Sundanese music. It contains a mix between traditional West Java music and pop. It features Detty Kurnia, a well known Sundanese singer. In his own words: "If a producer asks me to do a cassette, I will agree to do a fast popular piece for the title cut,
