In a long since retired song, written a half decade ago, My Place in the Cosmos founding members Kevin Durrance and Jon Benson, conclude The Stars Shine as Bright as Streetlights with a crescendo and the question , “Will anybody know I’m home?” The line has stuck with me until now, perhaps because there is finally an answer available; a resounding, “Yes.” My Place in the Cosmos initially disbanded in the back parking lot of a now closed coffee shop, on an August night (actually the weekend that Pluto was demoted to planetesmal status) that threatened to rain down on their supposed last performance. The move to break up was determined by geography, the simple factor of distance meant that the lifelong friends would no longer be together as they embarked on separate life paths. It is not ironic that the name of this band is My Place in the Cosmos, as it soon became evident after more than one year apart that Kevin Durrance, Jon Benson, Ethan Cheesman, and John Gionet had been right about their place from the start, and they resumed MPITC. Though the story of My Place is fascinating, and possibly only to someone who observed it, the importance of this band lies in their sound. In an overwhelmingly superficial music industry fueled by cookie cutter band formulas and an unsettling focus on image, My Place in the Cosmos stand in the minority of musicians actually creating art; not product.
