It seems that these days music is made in ultimatum: If you write catchy songs, the message you present must include a vapid set of one-liners and cliché riffs backed up by a hipster image and a small army of teenage girls. On the other hand those removed from the mainstream have bloodied their lips biting down too hard on the next big thing in indie music. It seems like a loaded equation in either sense; your band is a marketable investment or your band doesn't eat. Regardless, my intention is not to scream,"The sky is falling!" on modern music but to introduce a band that missed out on the ultimatum. In Royal Company, from Fitchburg, Massachusetts, have dedicated themselves to playing sincere music; to offer a gimmick-free lesson in what it means to break the mold, while still having enough hook to keep you hanging on every word. IRC have ardently, honestly, and energetically created a record that is as smart as it is subversive in "Rumor Has It". "Rumor Has It" is a sobering experience; black coffee and a cold shower after a long night next to the wrong person. There is a brutal honesty in the lyrics, a biting candor that is part confessional and part accusation (I'll tell you what you want to hear tonight, but I think that's how this whole thing got started. When you're done having your fun could you pack up and leave quietly? Just wash your hands before you go.) What is perhaps most impressive is the connection between the words and how they are sung.
