Artist
Many consider the late Ratau Makhalemele to be one of South Africa's leading saxophonists. Playing professionally since the late '60s, Makhalemele made his widest impression as a member of the Drive, a group he formed with Henry Sithole in the 1970s. Aa a highly respected session player, Makhalemele has worked with Champion Jack Dupree, Joe Henderson, Curtis mayfield, and Clarence Carter. His greatest influence was the South African saxophonist Kippie Moeketsie. Makhalemele's debut solo album, Thabang, was released in 1990. Makhalemele passed away on 6 May 2000. "My mission is to the music, it's as simple as that. In order for me to accomplish the mission I always stay focused. Each of my songs has a purpose and each song says something special".
