Me Jane began serendipitously when the band’s three founding members met at a 2011 house party in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. Marites Velasquez had just moved to the city from Arizona, bringing along her bass and the urge to start a new band. Mutual friends introduced Marites to guitarist KaJe Gallegos and drummer Sarah Braunstein, and aMer several months of dilly-dallying, the trio recorded their first demo in July 2012 at CarterCo Recording. The band’s influences range from Sonic Youth to Electrelane and the Chicago Tribune wrote of Me Jane “the trio thrives on collaboraJon, each bringing unique aspects and influences to the table, which rounds out the Me Jane sound - the trio is a rock band, but its sounds and arrangements have arWul nuance.” Kyla Denham joined the group in the spring of 2013, adding her melodious synths as a full and scinJllaJng layer on top of Me Jane’s core rock sound.
