Mahavira are a UK based Alternative rock band. Their endless sea of melodies infused with a blend of eastern and western rhythms has drawn critical acclaim by both fans and the industry. In June 2008 demos of their tracks, “Mourning Star”, “Warhorse” and an Acoustic version of “22” were added to the playlist on the BBC Asian Network’s Friction show, which lead them to being featured as Friction’s artist of the week as well as being interviewed by Bobby Friction himself. “Love it, love it, love it” – Bobby Friction In 2006 after many gigs, including tours with bands such as “Fear Factory” and “Breed 77” guitarist Jay Matharu had thought about the concept of fusing elements of Indian classical music with Rock music. Influenced by grunge and the alternative rock movement of the nineties, Jay began playing guitar and composing songs at age thirteen. In his childhood he was subjected to Indian classical music by way of his mother’s Indian restaurant, though he never took up any Indian instrument he always showed an interest. He spent most of his teens performing with various rock and blues bands including Ireland’s “Bleedin’ Blues Band” In the summer of 2007 Jay placed ads looking for instrumentalists to play with. The first musician to be incorporated was Raj Heer on bass. Raj came from a family of musicians and shared a similar vision.
