Ljubica Marić (1909-2003) is considered to be the most original Serbian composer of the twentieth century and musically the most influential one. She was the first composer in the history of music who systematically used the modal system of the Byzantine Orthodox church music to compose non liturgical works. Ljubica Marić developed her authentic style by using the Byzantine church music within the post-expressionistic idiom. All her compositions are inspired by her personal philosophy based on Taoism. Ljubica Marić was also one of the first European female conductors who developed her career between two world wars. She was also a poet, a painter and a sculptor. Her most important compositions include a cantata Songs of Space, for mixed choir and orchestra on the medieval tomb epitaphs of the Bosnian “bogumils” and a cycle Music of Octoëchos (with Octoïcha 1, for orchestra, Byzantine Concerto, for piano and orchestra, cantata Threshold of a Dream and Ostinato super thema Octoïcha, for piano, harp and strings). She was Serbia's most important and innovative modernist composer before World War II. Now, how many other countries can claim that their pioneering modernist composer was a woman? Like, zero?
