Lea (Liliya) Ivanova (13 August 1923 - 28 May 1986) was a famous Bulgarian schlager and jazz singer. She was born in Dupnitza, Bulgaria but grew up in Tzarigrad (the Slavic name for Istanbul), where she studied at the Robert College and sang in the children choir of the Bulgarian Exarchate. In the early 40s her family moved back to Sofia and Lea thought of studying at the National Academy for Visual Arts. Lea’s music career started when she became soloist in the jazz formations at the art hall Slavyanska beseda („Славянска беседа“), and participated in the Jazz Ovcharov („Джаз Овчаров“) formation and the „Оптимистите“ Orchestra. She sang jazz and swing and was a pioneer singer in this genres, together with the singers Лени Вълкова and Люси Найденова In 1956 Lea Ivanova performed in the Hristo Vuchkov (Христо Вучков) and Dimiter Ganev’s (Димитър Ганев) Orchestra, as well as in the Big State Orchestra. in 1957 she married the singer and composer Еди Казасян. In the beginning of the 60s she toured Romania, Hungary, the former Republic of Yugoslavia and Berlin. Between 1963 - 1983 Lea Ivanova is a variety show artist in West Europe and she performed in the USA, Canada, South America and The Middle East. Her first record was called simply “Lea Ivanova” and appeared in 1975. In 1985 she was awarded the Kirill and Methodius Orden, I grade.
