Laura Nyro (born Laura Nigro; October 18, 1947 – April 8, 1997) was an American songwriter and singer. She received critical acclaim for her own recordings, especially the albums "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession" (1968) and "New York Tendaberry" (1969). Several artists, including Barbra Streisand and the 5th Dimension, achieved commercial success with songs she wrote. Although her broader recognition came after her death, she was admired by contemporaries such as Elton John. Nyro was noted for her emotive three-octave mezzo-soprano voice. Between 1968 and 1970, multiple artists had hits with her songs. The 5th Dimension recorded "Blowing Away," "Wedding Bell Blues," "Stoned Soul Picnic," "Sweet Blindness," and "Save the Country." Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul and Mary performed "And When I Die." "Eli's Comin'" was recorded by Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson, while Barbra Streisand recorded "Stoney End," "Time and Love," and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)." Nyro's best-selling single was her version of Carole King's and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof." Laura Nyro was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
