There is more than one band with this name. The first Lapel was formed in Dallas, Texas during the winter of 2008 from the remains of the daefunct Mersomme. Gian Carlos (Guitars/Vocals) Kato Bentley (Bass/Bells) and Daniel Alpiger (Drums/ Percussion) collaberated with Farin Records and recorded The Leaver EP in one session during early August of 2008. Carlos can be found playing with Sydney Confirm and Alpiger currently plays with Violent Still Life. The other Lapel is fronted by Debbie Neigher, who previously recorded two solo albums. Trying to find just the right moniker for her new synth-pop outfit, Debbie Neigher was inspired by a 1977 interview with author and actress Margaret Trudeau. When asked about her previous marriage to the Prime Minister of Canada, Trudeau famously responded: “I want to be more than a rose in my husband’s lapel.” This moment—and the name Lapel—boldly underscore the ethos of Neigher’s new project: “I love that quote. It’s about feminism. It’s about not wanting to be defined by someone else. Trudeau went on to have a significant impact as a mental-health advocate, too.
