Ladybaby is a Japanese kawaii metal musical group that originally consisted of models Rie Kaneko and Rei Kuromiya, along with Ladybeard, the cross-dressing persona of Australian professional wrestler Richard Magarey. The group is known for combining idol pop aesthetics with metal-influenced instrumentation and extreme vocal styles. The project began after Magarey, originally from Adelaide, Australia, moved to Hong Kong in 2006 to pursue stunt and wrestling work, where he developed his Ladybeard persona. He later moved to Tokyo in 2013, where he formed Ladybaby with Kaneko and Kuromiya. Their debut single, "Nippon Manju", was released in 2015 and presented as a celebratory song about Japanese culture. The accompanying music video went viral online, gaining rapid international attention and reaching approximately one million views within two days. Following this early success, the group released a second single in 2016, which reached number 15 on Japanβs daily Oricon chart. Shortly afterwards, Ladybeard left the group, and Ladybaby rebranded as "The Idol Formerly Known as Ladybaby". The remaining members continued performing and released further material, including the singles "Pelo" and "Pinky! Pinky!". In 2017, Rei Kuromiya left the group, citing dissatisfaction with idol industry conditions and health issues related to touring demands.
