Jukka Ruohomäki is a veteran in electronic music. He started on analogue equipment at the end of 1960's, worked with music through the 70's, made computer graphics in the 80's and began composing music again in 1994, after sixteen years of silence. Ruohomäki makes music with computers, and his method is based entirely on hearing. Bird song, human voices or steel plate scratching can all serve as basic material which is then worked into music. This is usually an extensive and time-consuming process. Ruohomäki does not use traditional pulse-based rhythmics, harmonics or notation. Instead, he listens to his sound material very carefully throughout the working process, in order to discover compositional possibilities offered by that material.
