about

Josep Pujol (fl. 1734 – 1798) was a Catalan composer and maestro de capilla. There is really little known about Pujol's life. The first news that is available is a mention of Querol, who cites the libretto of an oratory, La nave del mercader, which would have been set to music by Pujol in 1734, but the first direct news is from 1737, when the name of Pujol appears on the cover of some Easter lamentations. After the departure of José Picañol in 1736 to Madrid to occupy the musical teaching of the convent of the Royal Barefoot, it is assumed that Pujol moved to the position, although the exact date is unknown. On October 25, 1738, he signed as a chapel master of the Cathedral of Barcelona the censorship of the Musician Fragments of Brother Bernardo Comes, so it is certain that by then he already held the position, although the musicologist Greta Olson gives as a starting date 1739. A highlight of Pujol's career must have been the arrival of Charles III in Spain, which was celebrated in Barcelona with celebrations on October 17, 1759. The Relationship of Celebrations cites the great Te Deum composed and executed by Pujol in the cathedral as "extraordinary." José Duran also collaborated, at that time a teacher at the Countess' palace. Pujol is known for his activity as a composer in the Barcelona metropolitan area over the years, his last composition dating from La casta Susana from 1798.
