Johann Knöfel also Knefelius, Knöfelius, Knefel, Knöbel, Knöpflin (born around 1525–1530 in Lauban; died after 21. April 1617 in Prague) was a German composer and organist. The biography of the organist Kaspar Krumbhorn (born 1542) shows that Knöfel with approx. 30 years as a cantor of the Valentin Trotzendorff Latin School, a Lutheran institution in Goldberg in Silesia, and Krumbhorn was his student. At the time of his wedding, on the 21st. June 1569, he was Kapellmeister of Duke Heinrich XI of Liegnitz, Brieg and Goldberg. In 1579 he was Kapellmeister of the Phal Count's Elector of Heidelberg Ludwig VI. In 1583, after the death of Louis VI, the new Elector Johann Kasimir reintroduced Calvinism in the Palatinate, the Lutheran Knöfel was released from office and returned to Silesia. Shortly afterwards, in 1592, he went to Prague. This year he was an organist and cantor in St. Heinrich, a school in Prague Neustadt famous for its choir. Apart from a remark in the records of the city of Klagenfurt from 1617, nothing else is known about him: On the 21st. April, a payment of 30 Florin to Johann Knöfel is officially confirmed. However, this does not rule out the possibility that he continued to live in Prague. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
