Artist
Johann Balthasar Kehl (1725–1778) was a German composer, organist, and cellist active in Bayreuth and Erlangen in the mid-18th century. Trained in Coburg and later in Bayreuth under the court Kapellmeister Johann Pfeiffer, he spent his early career in the Bayreuth court ensemble before becoming organist of Erlangen’s Neustädter Kirche in 1762. Kehl is best remembered for his published organ chorales, the Sammlung einiger variierender Choräle (issued in four parts, 1764), which set Lutheran melodies in varied, keyboard-friendly textures. In 1774 he became Stadtkantor in Bayreuth, where he wrote church music and larger sacred works, including the oratorios Die Pilgrime auf Golgatha and Die Hirten bei der Krippe zu Bethlehem.
