Artist
Consistently interesting and accomplished Scottish bagpiper based in Scotland's capital city Edinburgh. To date he has recorded three critically acclaimed albums and toured Europe, North America and Asia with a dynamic live show. Both wildly creative and respectful of tradition, McRae (also known as Jimi the Piper) won a top UK award for original music composition in 2006 with his track about riding a motorcycle in the Scottish Highlands called Dornie Bends (fuel injection version) He began piping at 12 years-old and spent his formative years on the pipe band competition circuit in Scotland. He cut his teeth as a solo piper on the lively Edinburgh ceilidth scene of the 1990s and his depute album "Pipedreams" was released in 1999 to international acclaim. His next album "Earthdance" and the follow-up "Kick Out The Ghosts" placed him at the cutting edge of Scotland's alternative celtic music scene. On both cds McRae utilized a range of different pipes - from arabic and electronic to the traditional Highland variety - and also invited jazz and rock musicians to join him in the recordings. The result was what the UK's Folk/Roots magazine described as "Pink Floyd meets Jimi Hendrix at a world music convention. Brilliant" The accompanying live shows also cemented his reputation as Scotland's "rock piper". In the last year or so, McRae appears to have moved away from his wild stage persona to reconnect with his piping roots. In the Highland of Scotland - the heartland of pipin
