Jiří Válek (* 4 June 1940 in Olomouc) is a Czech flutist, composer and pedagogue. From 1954-1959 he studied flute at the Higher Music School in Kroměříž near Robert Sláma. At AMU, where he graduated in 1964, he was a student of Josef Bok and František Čech. In 1975-2006 he was a soloist of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Already during his studies, he was a soloist. He performed at the Prague Spring International Music Festival, in the subscription cycles of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, with the Prague Chamber Orchestra and with foreign ensembles. He also played a chamber play: in 1964-1975 he was a member of the Czech Nonet and from the 1970s Ars rediviva. With both ensembles and soloist he has made a number of recordings for Supraphon, Panton, Chandos, Naxos, Vanguard Classics, Pony Canyon, Nippon and some other music publishers as well as for Czech and foreign radio and TV stations. His composer's recording of flute sonatas, George Friedrich Händel, was awarded the Supraphon Gold Plaque in 1978 as well as foreign criticism (in more detail, Discography of Ars Rediviva). He has also played a major role in jazz. He wrote and recorded several dozen tracks and collaborated with leading personalities of the genre. He is a renowned pedagogue.
