The Cologne Chamber Orchestra (German: Kölner Kammerorchester) is Germany’s oldest chamber orchestra, founded in 1923 on the initiative of conductor Hermann Abendroth. Its inaugural concert took place on 30 November 1923 in the new Kunstvereinsgebäude am Friesenplatz in Cologne, conducted by Gustav Classens—then a student of Abendroth—marking the beginning of a century‑long commitment to what came to be known as “werkgerechte” (work‑faithful) interpretation. Since 1963, artistic leadership under Helmut Müller‑Brühl has shaped the ensemble’s blend of historical insight and modern sonority—most notably during its Capella Clementina period (1976–1986), when it performed exclusively on period instruments before returning to modern strings with a historically informed approach. Today, under Principal Conductor Christoph Poppen (appointed 2013), the orchestra is celebrated for its warm string tone, pioneering recordings (including a complete Mozart Mass cycle for Naxos), and international touring schedule, with over 200 CD and broadcast projects to its name.
