Ferns carpet a clearing, hidden deep in the forest. The air is rich with the smell of dampened earth and rotting leaves. A strange bird call echoes through the trees from some unseen corner of the woods. In the middle of the clearing stand two stunted apple trees, their apples are fragrant and sweet. I stand between them. Those trees still stand there, some sort of divide. Am I here on this side, or is this side the other side? How can one ever be sure? Should I follow the river or follow the leaves? The river is very cold and clear, strewn with boulders that fell from the mountainsides long ago. We will meet again on a boulder there. There is an owl in the old oak tree. It softly calls out in the evening, as it searches through the forest. I will lead you there, a silent guide. A distant star. Mist on a still river late at night, rising into the sky, some gentle specter. I was there, in the cool darkness, deep under the earth. All alone and forgotten. It seemed that the days would never end. No one sang to me for such a long time. I never heard my name. I will lead you there, to the heart of the forest, but you can never return home. I will lead you along the overgrown pathway, across the rushing river, to an island forest. In this forest is a clearing blanketed in fern.
