The Hyperdrive Kittens came to life in. . . about 1991. I (Guitarist/Songwriter Lee Sanders. . . stage name Lee Nails) had been playing bass in Livermore's Cement Trampoline, a band formed by my high school friends. When Cement Trampoline started to fall apart, I approached Trampoline drummer Don Conner about forming a new band with me, with a female vocalist, and inspired by music by the New York Dolls, The Ramones and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I asked hairdresser Jenene Curtis to be the Kittens singer, and enlisted my buddy Brett Harrison to play bass. Harrison's tenure proved to be short lived, and he was also the only male bassist the band would ever have. The list of female bassists was longer than Spinal Tap's roster of drummers. I actually wound up giving lessons to many of them myself. Notable bassists were: Mandy Colombo, Kim Pryor, Beky Haze and Marta Bulaich. Before long, we added my then girlfriend, and minor porn star, Tigger Le Twang on guitar and backing vocals. Our first 7 inch single was 'Phone Sex Girls' backed with 'Lipstick'. The Kittens played mostly in San Francisco, often sharing the stage with bands like the White Trash Debutantes, Screaming Bloody Marys and Pansy Division. Our second 7 inch was 'Rock 'N' Roll Drag Queen' (a rare lead vocal by me) backed with 'Addiction', released on the Outpunk label, also featured on the 'Outpunk Dance Party' album. Tigger Le Twang became co-lead vocalist, and eventually sole vocalist with the departure of Jenen
