Horny Genius was a band from Iowa City that was established in 1985 and lasted through 1991. Their style was anarchic and frenetic--lots of sharply snapped guitar strings and dissonant melodies on top of fuzzy shimmering rhythms and poppy bass vamps. Their lyrics were both literary and lowbrow, referencing with equal aplomb. Their music contains a wild raw beauty which exerted an true impact on those who heard it. You could hear such influences as Swell Maps or Mission of Burma. Their first releases were two cassette only releases, Dogs Under the Car in 1985 and My Life with Max in 1986. Max became quite the cult favorite in the Iowa area and was recently reissued digitally for the 25th anniversary of that release.Their first EP, Man and Beast was single of the week in NME in 1988 and featured the smash "Moving in the Grass". Their first official vinyl LP was Burn your Sister which came out in 1990. Produced and recorded at Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison, it captured the critics eyes with such noise pop tunes as "Hairball", "Cha Cha with Hal " and "Montanar Stomp". Original band members were John McNeill, Brian Hageman, Mike Turnis and Scott McWilliams. Hageman left the group in 1986 and moved to San Francisco to help form Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. Scott Siegling replaced Hageman. McWilliams left in 1989 and was replaced by Tom Schipper on drums.
