Bassist Ernst Glerum won the VPRO/Boy Edgar award 2009. It was a well-deserved prize for a man who has been a fantastic pioneer for years. The number of projects in which Glerum participated is quite astounding. The bass player, who studied at the renowned Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, is not only active as a musician. The composer Glerum regularly receives acclaim, too. With the Glerum Omnibus he plays his double bass, together with drummer Joost Patocka and pianist Ruben Hein. Glerum was born in Deventer and already knew his path in life at a young age. 'I didn't see myself playing in a classical orchestra. Still, besides jazz, classical music is very important to me and it is a never-ending challenge to unite the two genres.'
