Girolamo Chiti ( Siena , January 19, 1679 - Rome , September 4, 1759 ) was an Italian composer . While still a teenager he began his musical studies in Siena under the guidance of Giuseppe Ottavio Cini and the nephew of this Tommaso Redi. From 1708 he was choirmaster of the Tolomei College . In 1712 he went to Rome where he studied with Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni and Antonio Caldara . In 1717 he became choirmaster of the Pious house of the Orphans of Santa Maria in Aquiro in Rome. In 1726 he was appointed coadjutor of the chapel master Francesco Gasparini in the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. When Gasparini died, from April 1727 he succeeded him in the position of chapel master of the basilica, keeping it until his death. In 1735 he too became chaplain guardian of the Corsini chapel then built by Clement XII in the Lateran basilica. From September 1745 to May 1759 Chiti maintained a close correspondence with the composer and theorist of Bolognese music Giovanni Battista Martini , contributing considerably to the growth of the latter's music library. He always cultivated a strong interest in polyphonic music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and in particular in the sacred music of Palestrina . Over 3000 church compositions remain by Chiti, largely preserved in the archive of the Lateran basilica, both in a cappella style and in concertato style, with and without instruments.
