Artist
Giovanni Lorenzo Somis (Turin , 11 November 1688 - Turin , 29 November 1775) was an Italian violinist, composer and painter of the late Baroque. Known as L'Ardy or Ardito, like his father and brother Giovanni Battista . The nickname, which sometimes serves as a surname, is probably linked to some military company or war enterprise, at the time of the struggles against France between 1690 and 1693 . He began studying the violin with his father, and then moved to Bologna for 8 years, where he probably studied painting with Giuseppe Del Sole, and composition and violin with Girolamo Nicolò Laurenti. Returning to Turin he was appointed player in the military band of the King of Sardinia on 24 April 1724 , and was hired as a violinist in the Royal Chapel on 8 January 1732 . He held the post until 1770 when he retired. He was active for concerts in Rome and in the Kingdom of Naples. In 1753 he successfully performed in Paris . As for Giovanni Lorenzo's pictorial activity, it is known that he worked in various Savoy residences and that in addition to various paintings he created many portraits.
