For The Quail is a band from Dunedin, New Zealand, whose members have a long and confused pedigree. With previous and current connections with Dunedin artists Corrosive 8, Señor Kill Machine, Yumbo, Sunley, Hot Justice, Goblin, Missile Moon, Chihuahua, The Dry and The Local Hoons, it's no wonder there is some internal tension over stylistic output. We like it that way, though, and as frontman João said in response to a 1998 review of Corrosive 8 which stated "Corrosive 8 do not seem to be able to make up their minds about what they want to play," "why should we?" For The Quail pick up the linear, angular rock mantle where it was left bruised and bloodied by their more recent projects, Kill Machine and Chihuahua, and give it a glass of brandy before treating it to a road trip. All this isn't enough to please some people. FTQ's participation in a City Council funded event in Dunedin's Octagon on New Year's Eve 2006 was cut short when "local bar and café owners" complained that the band's eclectic, dynamic, and insistent style was "not suitable" for their evening diners.
