Filippo Rosa is best treated, on currently accessible evidence, as a composer-name attached to a very small body of mid-eighteenth-century recorder/flute repertory, with almost no recoverable personal biography. Modern scholarly discussion of the Neapolitan recorder tradition explicitly states that nothing is known of him, and even the commonly repeated association with Naples cannot be confirmed from the open evidence base used here. His name persists primarily because one or more attractive chamber pieces for treble instrument and basso continuo were copied, preserved, and later revived in modern performance and recording culture.
