His basic study was in violin, but as Mr. Topchjan expressed interest in conducting, he began taking classes from eminent Armenian conductor Maestro Ohan Durian. In 1991 Mr.Topchjan with a group of his friends from the Yerevan conservatory created the "Serenade" Chamber Orchestra, which he has been coaching since as its Artistic Director and Conductor. The "Serenade" at once became the most promising orchestra of the younger generation in Armenia and shortly afterwards, it made a good reputation in Western Europe as well winning prizes at various international competitions. The orchestra has released CDs containing Schoenberg’s compositions, Schubert-Mahler’s "Der Tod und das Madchen", Vivaldi’s "The Four Seasons", contemporary Armenian composer Edward Mirzoyan’s "Symphony for Kettledrums and Strings" produced by Thorophon among others. His first acquaintance with the APO musicians took place in the summer of 2000, when an orchestra comprised of the chamber orchestra "Serenade" and a group of leading APO musicians, under the baton of Maestro Topchjan, had an amazingly successful appearance at Bad Fussing Festival (Germany).
