Artist
Begun by Ron Kane and Darrell Rose in Long Beach, CA in Ron's Dad's den. Paul Sakrison came in at some point as performer, engineer and co-producer with Ron. Pseudonyms evolved for most members, except for Ron for no apparent reason. Darrell became known as Sneudt Q. Dildo and Paul as Senator Lenard DeCaye, D-Mass, often shortened to 'Lenard'. The Decayes interests were extremely eclectic with recordings of space music (first album) influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen, to the episodic comedy 'Captain Cadaver', dark rock ('Rich Peoples' Mailboxes'), social commentary ('House in Iran'), to teenaged angst mixing violence and sex. While Ron, Darrell and Paul were not skilled musicians, they were able to trick more talented musicians to practice and record with them, such as Mike Van Winkle (guitar) and John Payne (drums). Ron and Paul took some pride in how The Decayes sucked and played that up at live appearances. The Decayes were supplied with recoding equipment by Ron's brother, who was in the Air Force and brought back tape recorders from overseas at prices much lower than in the US. Most of the recording was done by overdubbing back and forth between two Sony TC-377 reel-to-reel 1/4 track decks and mastered onto an Otari 5050A 2-track machine borrowed from the school radio station.
