Artist
Born in Walsall, 1938. Educated: Queen Mary’s Grammar School, Walsall; Royal Academy of Music; Bristol University. Composer of orchestral, vocal, chamber and theatre music, written in accessible idiom with emphasis on melody, rhythm and colour. Orchestral works range from light music miniatures to substantial concert works (Variations for Orchestra, Piano Concerto etc.) Many of these have received regular broadcasts. Works for voices include an English Mass, part songs and carols, a Gerard Manley Hopkins song cycle, junior cantatas, a youth opera, and a stage musical. Several ‘audience adventures’, including Battle of Trafalgar (televised 1983). Also chamber works (String Quartet, Partita for Solo Horn, etc.) and educational music. Awards include Royal Philharmonic Society Prize (Piano Concerto), Eric Coates prize (Divertimento), Ivor Novello award (Fantasia), etc. Elected ARAM 1998. Jazz pianist (when opportunities arise).
