Born and raised in Davis, CA DJ Kross was introduced to jazz and classical music as an infant, initially inspired by pianists from Moz art to Dave Brubeck. Following his innate interest of music, Kross pursued piano lessons later as a 5 year old child and played mostly classical, competing in multiple piano competitions, until he graduated from high school. DJ Kross also pursued the jazz trombone in 5th grade and joined his first school jazz band in 8th grade. Awarded as the 'hardest working' student of the year by his band director, Kross went on to play in the renown Davis Senior High Jazz band and later on to state (SFJAZZ high school all-stars Jazz Band) and national (MENC All-National Honors Jazz Band) bands. By experiencing professional, positive music firsthand, DJ Kross hopes to bring these two elements back into the mainstream. DJ Kross first got into producing from his brother, who introduced him to FL studio. Amazed at the myriad of composition possibilities, Kross instantly became addicted to FL and began to compose his own music, starting from jazz and later progressing to hip hop as he developed his basketball skills at the same time, watching bball freestyle vids on youtube, which were usually accompanied by hiphop music. Kross finally discovered Jazzhop one day when he was exploring music on youtube and found Nujabes.
